COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

3, 4, and 5 Year-Olds

Age for enrollment is 3 years old by September 1st; however, children must be mature enough to remain in class and participate in the activities with the other children.

This year we're dividing them roughly in half.  We'll be piloting the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd with one group - we will be contacting parents about this option.  It's a very quiet, yet hands-on approach to learning the faith.  The other half will be doing our Preschool curriculum.  Created especially for 4-year-olds, Allelu! by Our Sunday Visitor helps our youngest faithful grow and develop with lessons and activities suited just for them.  Life and faith are celebrated as children learn about special seasons and days, Scripture, and prayer.  Active learning reinforces concepts as the children talk, move, mime, play games, color, cut, glue, draw, or sing to express themselves and their ideas.

First - Fifth Grade

St. Nicholas parish has chosen to use the Loyola Press series Finding God: Our Response to God’s Gifts because Loyola Press made a commitment to create a vehicle that would authentically pass on the truth and beauty of our Catholic faith.  Finding God gently intertwines experiences in prayer, Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching and liturgy for children and adults—as individuals, as families, and as learners on a faith journey.

The Finding God  program focuses on whole parish catechesis, which means that children learn about their faith based on scripture readings and the Church’s liturgical year, through stories, music, crafts, and activities, as well as the faith-sharing of their parents and catechists. Each lesson has a “with my family” page to assist parents in continuing the faith-sharing process  during the week.  Parents should ask their child(ren) for this page each Sunday.

Classes begin at 10:30 a.m. & end at 11:45 a.m.

Apostle Sundays

During the year there will be two opportunities, called Apostle Sundays, for parents to participate with their children in events that will strengthen their “little church” at home.

The two Apostle Sundays this year are:

  • January 15
  • April 2

Apostle Sunday events happen during the usual Sunday RE class time. Attendance is taken on Apostle Sundays as they are considered an RE class day.

Adoration

Adoration for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade is held once a month from 11:15—11:30 AM.  They are introduced to prayer before the Blessed Sacrament through the use of song, posture, and special prayers.  Parents are encouraged to make time to join us.

Sacraments

First Reconciliation,  First Communion,  and RCIC occur outside the Sunday morning RE classes [see individual brochures]. Sunday classes are mandatory for those in sacramental preparation.

Those third through fifth grade students who are already baptized but who have not had the opportunity to attend a regular RE program and need to receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will attend their age-appropriate class on Sundays as well as the monthly classes for Sacramental Preparation.

EXTREME WEATHER POLICY

Extremely cold weather or dangerously icy roads may result in a cancelled class. When the North Pole Time & Temperature Message at 8:00 AM (488-1111) states the temperature is minus 40 degrees or colder, or when the condition of roads are too icy, classes will be canceled.  Notifications will also be sent via Flocknote.  Be sure to sign up if you haven't already.
